Best Kept Secret: Prayer Part 2

June 2, 2024 / Andrew "Fitz" Fitzgibbon

Matthew 6:9-13 (NLT)
Pray like this: Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us today the food we need, and forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us. And don’t let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one.

God is not moved by the quantity or the quality of our words.

Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy.

Matthew 6:10 (NLT)
May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.

The purpose of prayer is to surrender our will, not to impose it.

Matthew 6:11 (NLT)
Give us today the food we need…

We’re desperate for the wrong things. We need to be desperate for God!

God invites us to depend on him.

Matthew 6:12 (NLT)
…and forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us.

Matthew 5.38-42 (NLT)
“You have heard the law that says the punishment must match the injury: ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say, do not resist an evil person! If someone slaps you on the right cheek, offer the other cheek also. If you are sued in court and your shirt is taken from you, give your coat, too. If a soldier demands that you carry his gear for a mile, carry it two miles. Give to those who ask, and don’t turn away from those who want to borrow.“

Forgiveness is choosing to pay the debt you are owed.

Forgiveness is not:

  • Easy
  • Natural
  • A response to an apology
  • Trust
  • Looking the other way and pretending it didn’t happen
  • Forgetting
  • A feeling
  • Optional

Matthew 6:14-15 (NLT)
“If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins.”

We are not forgiven by God because we forgive others.  We forgive others because we have been forgiven by God.

Ephesians 1:7 (NLT)
He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins.

Matthew 6:13 (NLT)
And lead us not into temptation, but rescue us from the evil one.

PRAYER:
Our Father in heaven,
may your name be kept holy.
May your Kingdom come soon.
May your will be done on earth,
    as it is in heaven.
Give us today the food we need,
    and forgive us our sins,
as we have forgiven those who sin against us.
And don’t let us yield to temptation,
but rescue us from the evil one.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
