THE BEATITUDES

Matthew 5:3-5 (NIV)
3-5 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.“

Matthew 5:6 (NIV)
5 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

RIGHTEOUSNESS VS SELF RIGHTEOUSNESS

Righteous/ness – being right with God

Matthew 7:13-14 (NIV)
13-14 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.“

Wide Path = Self Righteousness

Philippians 3:5-6 (NLT)
5-6 I was circumcised when I was eight days old. I am a pure-blooded citizen of Israel and a member of the tribe of Benjamin—a real Hebrew if there ever was one! I was a member of the Pharisees, who demand the strictest obedience to the Jewish law. I was so zealous that I harshly persecuted the church. And as for righteousness, I obeyed the law without fault.

Matthew 23:27-28 (NIV)
27-28
“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.“

Matthew 7:22-23 (NIV)
22-23 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’

Proverbs 15:9 (NIV)
The LORD detests the way of the wicked, but he loves those who pursue righteousness.

THE POISON OF SIN

Our self-righteousness is like a junkyard…rusting relics of our past efforts.

We are poisoned by sin – self righteousness isn’t the answer – it won’t satisfy.

2 Corinthians 5:21 (NIV)
21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

TRUE RIGHTEOUSNESS

True righteousness comes through faith in Christ.

The greatest satisfaction you will find in life is to be right with God!

Philippians 3:7-9 (NLT)
7-9 I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done. Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ and become one with him. I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ. For God’s way of making us right with himself depends on faith.
